农历九月初九是重阳节，在英语里多翻译成Chongyang Festival或者Double Ninth Festival。

古老的《易经》中把“六”定为阴数，把“九”定为阳数，九月九日，日月并阳，两九相重，故而叫重阳，也叫重九，古人认为是个值得庆贺的吉利日子，并且从很早就开始过此节日。

The Double Ninth Festival occurs on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, it falls on Oct 11. 

In Chinese tradition, the number nine is considered the highest number and is a homonym for the Chinese word "jiu," which symbolizes the auspicious wish for "longevity and good health."

1989年，我国把每年的九月九日定为老人节，传统与现代巧妙地结合，成为尊老、敬老、爱老、助老的老年人的节日。

重阳节最为人熟知的习俗是登高，除此之外，还有哪些习俗呢？

▌插茱萸（Wearing cornel twigs / Dogwood）

茱萸是一种长青乔木（evergreen arbor），味道浓烈，果实可食用，枝叶可入药。茱萸可以除虫，祛湿，助消化，解内热（They can expel insects, get rid of the humidity, help digestion and cure inner heat）。

插茱萸的习俗早在唐代就已盛行，古人认为在重阳节这一天插茱萸可以避难消灾（prevent diseases and avoid disasters）；或佩带于臂，或作香袋把茱萸放在里面佩带，还有插在头上的。

▌赏菊（Enjoying chrysanthemum flowers）

重阳节前后是菊花绽放的时节，菊花不仅姿容美丽、品性高雅还具有药用、食用价值。

据传赏菊，起源于晋朝大诗人陶渊明。陶渊明以隐居出名，以诗出名，以酒出名，也以爱菊出名；后人效之，遂有重阳赏菊之俗。

▌吃重阳糕（Eating Double Ninth cake）

重阳糕又称花糕（flower cake）、菊糕（chrysanthemum cake）、五色糕（five-color cake），制无定法，较为随意。九月九日天明时，以片糕搭儿女头额，口中念念有词，祝愿子女百事俱高，乃古人九月作糕的本意。

▌饮菊花酒（Drinking chrysanthemum flower wine）

古时候，人们酿造菊花酒是在重阳节当天摘取新鲜的菊花和叶子泡入酒中，待到次年重阳节拿出来饮用。据说，菊花酒有明目，缓解头痛，降血压，减肥以及消除胃部不适（effects on sharpness of the eye, alleviation of headache, drop of hypertension, reduction of weight and removal of stomach trouble）等功效，因此也被成为长寿酒。

▌登高（Climbing heights）

在古代，民间在重阳有登高的风俗，故重阳节又叫“登高节”（Mountain-climbing Festival）。

相传此风俗始于东汉。唐代文人所写的登高诗很多，大多是写重阳节的习俗；杜甫的七律《登高》，就是写重阳登高的名篇。登高所到之处，没有划一的规定，一般是登高山、登高塔。
